Sources Claim A California Democrat Helped Write Stories Under His Byline — While The Pair Hid A Secret Romance

According to The New York Post, 46-year-old Memo Torres abruptly severed ties this week with the left-leaning outlet L.A. TACO following an internal probe that management says capped nearly five months of discussions over repeated violations of newsroom policies and basic journalistic standards. The rupture has ignited a very public clash between Torres and his former employer, with L.A. TACO aggressively rebutting suggestions that he was pushed out as part of a retreat from hard-hitting coverage of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operations across Southern California.

At the center of the controversy is a dispute over ethics, transparency, and the increasingly blurred lines between activism and journalism in progressive media circles. L.A. TACO, which built a brand on hyperlocal coverage and left-of-center commentary, now finds itself defending its credibility while a reporter once celebrated as a crusading voice against ICE portrays himself as a casualty of internal politics and editorial cowardice.

“Memo Torres did important work here, and we’re grateful that he rose to the challenge when ICE began their siege of our city. But we fired him for repeated violations of our policies and our basic journalistic standards. That’s it. That’s the reason,” the outlet said in a statement published Saturday. The publication insisted it had given Torres multiple chances to acknowledge problems and correct course, stressing that his ouster “had nothing to do” with its immigration reporting.

“The rumor that we’ve turned our back on ICE coverage is a lie. And a dangerous one,” the statement said. Yet behind the scenes, sources cited by the outlet and other reports have raised pointed questions about Torres’ coverage of Democratic state Sen. Sasha Renee Pérez, 34, including allegations that the two maintained a personal relationship while he was reporting on her legislative agenda and public profile.

The most explosive claim is that Pérez was permitted to edit and even write portions of stories that ultimately ran under Torres’ byline, a scenario that would represent a textbook breach of journalistic ethics and a direct conflict of interest. The senator has categorically denied any such involvement, pushing back hard on the notion that she had any hand in shaping L.A. TACO’s editorial content.

“I did not write any articles or control the editorial decisions of L.A. Taco,” Pérez said in a statement. “Any person suggesting I wrote pieces for L.A. Taco is attempting to undermine my work and attack Memo’s integrity.” Pérez, the youngest member of the California Senate and a rising figure in the state’s progressive ranks, did, however, acknowledge that she and Torres had a prior personal relationship.

She said L.A. TACO’s management instructed them roughly six months ago to limit their communication, a directive she claims both parties respected. A source close to Torres likewise rejected the ghostwriting allegations, insisting the veteran reporter would never allow another person to write under his name and arguing that executives were fully aware of the relationship as early as February.

According to that insider, the relationship was later seized upon as a convenient pretext to remove Torres amid internal disagreements over the tone and intensity of the outlet’s immigration coverage. The California Post has reached out to Torres for comment, but he has so far spoken only selectively through friendly outlets and social media, leaving many of the most serious accusations unaddressed.

L.A. TACO, for its part, maintains that it attempted to engineer a soft landing for its embattled reporter. The outlet says it offered Torres favorable exit terms, including a generous severance package and public backing for whatever independent venture he chose to pursue next.

“On his final day, Memo told us himself he was ready to go independent, and that it was a better fit for what he wanted to do,” the statement said. “We thought we left on good terms, and offered to publicly support his next chapter and give him a generous severance.”

Instead, the outlet contends, Torres took to social media and private channels to suggest he had been blindsided, feeding a narrative that L.A. TACO was abandoning its aggressive ICE coverage under pressure or fatigue. That storyline, the publication argues, has not only misrepresented the facts but has also turned parts of the activist community against one of the few independent newsrooms still operating in Los Angeles.

“Memo built his name as a truth-teller and a community leader. But right now, a false narrative is being spread, and it’s dividing the very community he claims to serve,” the outlet said. “Memo, you’ve always said you stand for the truth. Then tell it.”

Torres has rejected the claim that he refused to accept responsibility for his work or his conduct. “I have no idea what they are talking about. I have never refused accountability about anything,” he told LA Material, a separate outlet that has been chronicling the dispute and amplifying his side of the story.

L.A. TACO says the break came only after an internal investigation and nearly five months of repeated conversations about his behavior and adherence to standards. Sources cited by LA Material have alleged that management, concerned about Torres’ conduct, imposed new safeguards, including a requirement that he complete an ethics course that he allegedly never took.

Tensions reportedly boiled over this month when editors confronted Torres about what they describe as a significant journalistic error and his alleged refusal to accept responsibility for it. That confrontation, according to the outlet, was the final straw that led to his dismissal, even as supporters of Torres insist the real issue was ideological friction over how aggressively to target ICE and law enforcement.

Questions about Torres’ coverage of Pérez have focused in particular on a cluster of stories in early 2026, when the senator was advancing legislation to increase oversight of immigration detention centers. Torres promoted an oversight bill introduced by Pérez on Feb. 6, covered her press conference less than two weeks later, and highlighted the legislation again the following month in what critics now see as a pattern of unusually favorable coverage.

The Feb. 6 story was later updated with an editor’s note acknowledging that it had been amended to meet editorial standards, a quiet but telling admission that something in the original version did not pass muster. The pair also appeared together publicly in May, when Pérez presented L.A. TACO with a journalism award during the 2026 Latino Spirit Awards, a high-visibility event at the state Capitol.

She reportedly walked arm in arm with Torres onto the Assembly floor, a symbolic image that now raises obvious questions about boundaries between a reporter and a politician he covers. For conservatives long skeptical of activist-style “journalism” that blurs the line between reporting and advocacy, the optics reinforce concerns that some progressive outlets function more as public-relations arms for favored politicians than as independent watchdogs.

Torres’ personal story had once been held up as a testament to grassroots journalism and the power of digital media. He rose from working as a landscaper to becoming a nationally recognized multimedia reporter over seven years at L.A. TACO, largely on the strength of his relentless, around-the-clock coverage of local ICE raids and immigration enforcement.

After announcing his departure on social media with the caption “End Of An Era,” Torres quickly launched an independent Substack publication. Within days, that newsletter climbed into the platform’s top three U.S. news charts, a sign of both his personal following and the appetite among progressive readers for adversarial coverage of immigration enforcement and border policy.

His exit has prompted an outpouring of support from readers and activists, many of whom expressed anger and confusion over the split and appeared ready to accept his version of events without waiting for a full accounting. “All the respect in the world. LA owes you such a debt for everything, idk what happened or where you’re going but glad to see you pushing forward,” one fan wrote, capturing the emotional loyalty Torres commands among his base.

Another supporter was more blunt, writing: “This f—ing sucks…..sorry bro.” That kind of reaction underscores how personality-driven and tribalized modern media consumption has become, with audiences often rallying to favored figures and treating institutional standards as secondary or even suspect.

L.A. TACO, meanwhile, has been at pains to reassure its audience that its immigration reporting will not be scaled back or softened. “Let us be crystal clear: L.A. TACO will never stop covering ICE, immigration, and the attacks on our communities,” the outlet said, attempting to draw a bright line between its editorial mission and the personnel dispute.

The publication ended its statement by directly challenging Torres to confront the controversy rather than allowing his supporters to attack the newsroom unchecked. “How do you benefit from this? How does this movement benefit from canceling one of L.A’.s only independent newsrooms?” the outlet asked, framing the backlash as a kind of intra-left “cancel” campaign that threatens the very institutions activists claim to value.

“This was never about one person. It’s about a community. And that community deserves the truth.” For observers who still believe journalism should be governed by clear ethical rules—disclosure of conflicts, separation from political figures, and accountability for errors—the unresolved questions around Torres’ relationship with Pérez and his conduct inside the newsroom highlight the risks when ideology and personality eclipse standards, and when media outlets on the left are reluctant to police their own until a scandal forces their hand.
